Top Ten Auto-Buy Authors

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

I love this week's theme! It made me realize how many authors I am devoted to ... err, and explains my constant need for bookshelf space.

1) Margaret Atwood

When I was in college, I read The Handmaid's Tale, traumatized my roommate by making her read it, and then went on to read pretty everything of Atwood's I could get my hands on. I'm a huge fan, and I can't read to read The Testaments.

2) Moira Fowley-Doyle

The Accident Season and The Spellbook of Lost and Found were both stunning, magical books. They will both be re-reads for years to come, and I'm eagerly anticipating All the Bad Apples.

3) Haruki Murakami

There's a special place in my heart for Murakami's complex, strange universes, often filled with unusual cats, girls trapped in wells, and lots of jazz reference. Whether straight-up realistic fiction, like Norwegian Wood, or the fantastical world of Kafka on the Shore, I'll read anything by Murakami.

4) Maggie Stiefvater

I'm a gigantic fan of The Raven Cycle. I haven't read any of her other books yet, but I definitely will.

5) Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant

McGuire has such an impressive range of writing skills. From a tremendous trilogy about zombies to the dreamy, fantastic Wayward Children series, there's nothing I haven't read from her that I've disliked.

6) Katherine Applegate

Wishtree, Crenshaw, The One and Only Ivan. Applegate's books are beautiful and guaranteed to make me cry. I think she's one of the best middle grade authors out there.

7) Libba Bray

Bray's Diviners series is genuinely scary, beautiful, and while technically historical fiction, also an adept looking glass into current America. I can't wait to read The King of Crows. I also wholeheartedly recommend her previous series, starting with A Great and Terrible Beauty.

8) Mindy McGinnis

I was first introduced to Mindy McGinnis through an Owl Crate offering,
A Madness So Discreet. It was raw, horrific, fascinating look at insane asylums back in the day. It deals with rape, incest, and suicide, all with an unflinching focus. I wasn't at all prepared for that book, but it's stayed with me, years later. Since then, I've also read The Female of the Species and Heroine. Each of these YA novels delve into difficult topics with no easy outs.

9) Jennifer McMahon

10) Stephen King

Honorable Mention: Carrie Vaughn

Second Honorable Mention: James S.A. Corey

I'm sure I could go on and on with the honorable mentions, but I'm cutting it off with two.

    1. I love everything that she's written with the exception of her poetry, although honestly I haven't given it much of a shot. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I agree on Katherine Applegate! Her books are so poignant and powerful. I always look forward to a new book from her. I also really like Mindy McGinnis and Jennifer McMahon. I used to a be a huge Stephen King fan, but I've gotten too wimpy for him in my old age :)

    Happy TTT!

    1. Yes, another Applegate fan! It's funny, I read King when I was a teenager, stopped for many years (because his stuff scared me), and then returned to his novels. I think there's a kind of nostalgia I feel for his work. Anyway, thanks for stopping by!
