Social Creature by Tara Isabella Burton

They go through both bottles of champagne right there on the High Line, with nothing but the stars over them... They drink and Lavinia tells Louise about all the places they will go together, when they finish their stories, when they are both great writers-to Paris and to Rome and to Trieste...

Lavinia will never go. She is going to die soon.

Louise has nothing. Lavinia has everything. After a chance encounter, the two spiral into an intimate, intense, and possibly toxic friendship.

This book was BONKERS!

I went in blind, having little idea what this was about beside a "toxic friendship." I was expecting something akin to Tartt's A Secret History, especially with the artistic inclinations of Lavinia and Louise, our two newfound besties from different socioeconomic worlds. But it quickly turns into something very different. Lavinia is a troubled free-spirit who welcomes Louise in her life. There are warning signs everywhere that Lavinia isn't stable, but Louise is charmed, and quickly their lives become dangerously intertwined. But Louise isn't exactly who she seems to be, either.

I love how these characters' lives are filtered through Facebook and social media; if someone posts something, and others Like it, it has to be real. Louise is a quiet, savvy woman who understands all too well how manipulative social media can be. It's a game that must be played, and played well.

I do think that the similarities to Highsmith's Ripley are apt. This is a nuanced, heart-slamming tale about sociopathy, and how far people will go to get exactly what they want.
